Application examples of polyethylene (PE) pipes for water supply

Polyethylene (PE) pipe is very versatile. In the 1960s, Western developed countries in Europe and the United States began to use PE pipes in urban gas transmission and water supply pipe network systems. By the 1980s, the application technology of PE pipes abroad was very mature. Polyethylene (PE) pipe has a short history of popularization and application in my country, especially as a pressure pipe for water supply, which is only a matter of recent years.

Plastic pipes have excellent properties such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, low friction, non-scaling, and long service life. In addition to the common advantages of plastic pipes, polyethylene (PE) pipes have special flexibility and extremely high The elongation and the unique hot-melt welding connection method bring many advantages that other pipe materials do not have. 1. In the Baoshan earthquake in Yunnan Province, only the polyethylene water supply piping system was intact.
The Baoshan Water Supply Company of Yunnan Province installed two specifications of polyethylene water supply pipelines in January 2001. dn110mm and dn160, PN0.6MPa. After more than two months of operation, earthquakes occurred in the area on April 10th and 12th, with magnitude 5.9. In the earthquake, other water supply pipelines in the city, including cement pipes, glass fiber reinforced plastic lime sand pipes, UPVC pipes and cast iron pipes, were damaged to varying degrees. The water supply was restored after emergency rescue. The polyethylene (PE) pipes were intact and continued to supply water. Because of its flexibility and high elongation, polyethylene (PE) pipes are highly adaptable to changes in the pipeline foundation and have good seismic resistance.

2. Deyang City Water Supply Company does not excavate the expressway and uses polyethylene pipes to repair the damaged pre-stressed reinforced concrete water supply pipeline across the expressway.
In the summer of 2000, a pre-stressed reinforced concrete pipe with a diameter of 300 mm across the highway from Chengdu to Mianyang in Deyang City, Sichuan Province interrupted water supply due to serious water leakage affecting the foundation. In order not to affect the smooth flow of the highway, the company and the technicians of the Semp company decided not to excavate the highway and used 250mm polyethylene (PE) water pipes for emergency repairs. They connected the 88mPE pipe across the highway into a long pipe by heat welding. The PE pipe was manually pushed over the highway from the cement. In just one day, more than 200 meters of pipe were repaired and normal water supply was restored.

3. The Kunming Water Supply Company used polyethylene pipes to repair the broken and leaking cast iron water supply network of the South Railway Station.
In January of 2002, the 300mm inner diameter cast iron water supply pipe of Kunming South Railway Station was broken and the community water supply was stopped. There are many railways and buildings above the underground pipelines, and it is still very difficult to repair with cast iron pipes. The investment in the new pipeline network is expensive and time does not allow. With the assistance of the Kunming Office, after calculating the water flow, it was decided to use PN0.8MPa, dn250mm polyethylene (PE) pipes to penetrate the damaged cast iron pipes with a public section of pipe jacking and traction. In half a day, more than 120 pipes were removed. Repair the water supply.

4. The Liupanshui City Water Supply Company in Guizhou Province chose polyethylene pipes instead of lined cast iron pipes, which greatly reduced the project cost.
The Hecheng Garden Water Supply Project of Liupanshui Water Supply Corporation, Guizhou Province, was originally designed to use lined cast iron pipes with Ø600mm1400mm and Ø200mm3200m; the planned project cost is 3.7 million yuan. Later, the Municipal Design Institute chose polyethylene pipes for water supply because of low friction. After flow calculation, PN0.6MPa, dn500mm, PE 1400mm; PN0.6MPa, dn200mm, PE pipe 3200m. The project was completed at the end of 2001, and the total cost did not exceed 3 million yuan. Among them: engineering installation costs include civil works, transportation, etc. It is reduced from 42 yuan/meter to 18 yuan/meter, which reduces the intensity of installation work and shortens the construction period.

5. Wuhan Dongxihu Water Supply Company uses polyethylene pipes for water supply to solve the problem of water supply across lakes and harbors and fishing ponds.
Dongxihu District of Wuhan City, Hubei Province is a development zone dotted with lakes, rivers, and ponds, and it is difficult to lay the water supply network. In November 2001, Dongxihu Water Supply Company wanted to solve the problem of water supply in the community on the south bank of Niu Nan Lake. If traditional cement pipes or ductile iron pipes are used, one way is to drain the lake and ditch 500 to lay across the lake; one is Lay round the shore of the lake to the shore, using at least 1,000 pipelines. Finally, the water company used DN400 polyethylene pipes for joints on the south bank, and used gasoline drums to lead the pipes to the shore. After the pressure test, water was added and counterweights were added to sink the pipes to the bottom of the lake. The construction was very convenient and fast, and it also saved costs.

Later, in the pipeline project that passed through the 100-meter-wide Dongliu Port and the 100-meter-wide fishing pond connected to it, Dongxihu Water Supply Company used polyethylene pipes and the same laying method to solve the problem, and the entire pipeline network has been running well so far.
